Why Buy Energy Efficient Appliances?

(By Stu Silverman)

When purchasing a new home appliance, many people go straight to the discount department and select the cheapest model available. The difference in price can be significant - but is it really worth it?

Most of the time the cheapest models of appliances are far from the most energy efficient - which will cost you more in the long run. That's why it's recommended to consider a model which provides energy savings, rather than simply a reduced purchase price. In other words, if you buy a fridge that is more expensive than the discounted models, but is more energy efficient, you will discover that it is worth the extra money because your energy costs will be reduced each month. The energy savings will pay for the difference in cost, and continue to save you money into the future.

In order to make sure you're selecting the right appliance for you, here are some simple steps to follow:

  • Carefully read the labels or the user guide to ensure you're getting the features you need
  • Compare the energy consumption for similarly-priced models
  • Consider both the purchase price and the estimated energy consumption when deciding on a specific model
  • Look for the ENERGY STAR logo to be sure you're purchasing an approved energy-efficient appliance
  • Inquire about any tax incentives or rebates available for purchasing energy efficient appliances, and make sure the model you're considering qualifies

Although there are many home appliance options that meet energy conservation standards, be aware that some models are more energy efficient than others. Consider both purchase price and energy efficiency - and the resulting savings on your energy bills each month - when reviewing all the possible options.

For most people, the main reason to purchase energy efficient appliances is to save on their utility bills. But it's also important to remember that energy efficient appliances save energy, which helps conserve scarce natural resources, and reduces the pollution that's produced in the generation of electricity. So you're doing your part for the environment!

I was very satisfied with my energy audit. Thank you!
